Better Light
T5 & T8 Fluorescent fixtures have an 86 *CRI, HID fixtures have a 21-70 CRI depending on bulb type. A higher CRI allows for similar comfort levels with fewer lumens. T5 & T8 fluorescent fixtures also experience a much lower level of light loss as they age, they maintain over 90% or their original output throughout their life. HID fixtures by comparison can lose over 40% of their original out put halfway through their life span and continue to decrease throughout their whole life span. Unfortunately even though light output decreases with age, power consumption for HID fixtures does not.
*CRI or Color Rendering Index is a method for describing the effect of a light source on the color appearance of objects, compared to a reference source of the same color temperature. The highest CRI attainable is 100.
Instant Strike/Instant Re-Strike
Fluorescent lights turn on instantly, no waiting for lights to warm up. After a power failure lights turn back on instantly with no time delay.
Motion Sensors
Because fluorescent fixtures turn on instantly, fixtures may be controlled by motion sensor. When areas are unoccupied, lights turn off automatically after an adjustable time period and turn back on instantly when someone enters the area. When used correctly motion sensors can dramatically reduce power consumption in affected areas.
Safety
HID lamps operate at very high temperatures and can fail catastrophically at the end of their life span, sending hot particles onto whatever is below them. Fluorescent lamps operate at a much cooler temperature than their HID counterparts.
Because the produce less heat, upgrading to fluorescent fixtures can also have a significant impact on Air Conditioning/Cooling systems resulting in further savings.
